Biomass plans for Isle of Wight sites

Friday, October 5, 2012 - 10:34

A NEW woodchip biomass boiler could be installed in the West Wight, while updated plans have been submitted for a biomass energy centre on a Newport housing development.
A public consultation to discuss the plans for a boiler at West Wight Sports Centre is due to be held next Friday, between 4pm and 6pm, at the charity-run facility in Moa Place.
Those behind the plans have said the boiler would help stabilise the cost of energy used to heat the centre.
The 195kw boiler would provide heating and hot water to reduce the use of gas boilers during periods of peak demand and comply with government emission limits.
It would be located in a wooden clad building to the west of the sports centre and use around 120 tonne of woodchip annually, which would be delivered in 8 tonne lots.
In Newport, Barrett Homes, has submitted revised plans for a biomass energy centre that will provide heating for the Pan Meadows housing development.
The plans also include space for parking and a community recycling centre.
According to the application: "Since the original and the more recent consent was granted, further discussions were had with the Isle of Wight Council and a review of the design concept was undertaken which has resulted in some minor alterations to the design."
The centre is designed to produce 3.6MW compared with 1.1MW originally.
Fuel is due to be delivered by lorry, two to three times a day.
The building will also incorporate a visitor centre and offices. Changes to the plans include a reconfiguration of office space and less glazing.
