SUPPORTERS of a charity are one step closer to raising £8,000 for a paediatric heart screening unit on the Isle of Wight, thanks to a Christmas fair.

Tina Maretic, with friends Andrew Quew, Martin Baldwin and Vicky Baker, are fundraisers for Cardiac Risk in Young (CRY) — which raises awareness of conditions that can lead to young sudden cardiac death or sudden death syndrome.

A total of £347 was raised at the fair in All Saints’ Church, Ryde, which included crafts, a raffle, cakes and jumble stalls, and has been added to their current total of £3,000.

Tina became a supporter of CRY after her daughter, Fran, collapsed at home four years ago because of a heart condition. She suffered from tachycardia, a condition where the heart rate exceeds 100 beats per minute.

Money has been raised by a sponsored skydive, from collection boxes and the sale of wristbands. Tina is planning a sponsored slim and a burlesque show in the new year.

She said: "I want to raise enough money for a heart screening unit because not only is it important for children and young people but also for their families."
