Brading backing Fight for the Wight

Saturday, April 16, 2016 - 7:00

BUSINESSES in Brading are backing the Fight for the Wight campaign.
Fourteen businesses signed up to Fight for the Wight after Sue Birch, chair of Brading Residents Action Group, rallied support in the area.
Sue said: "It is very important to spread awareness about how serious the situation is on the Island."
In Brading, 16.5 per cent of the population claims benefits and 20 per cent lives in fuel poverty — 4.4 percent above the national average.
A total of 17.5 per cent of people in the town do not have central heating in their homes, which is 9.1 percent above the national average.
Sue added: "Everyone should take an interest in the campaign, read all about it. Realise the dire straits the Island will be in if government does not change its funding formula next year.
"What the County Press is trying very hard to do is engage with the public to ensure Islanders’ experiences caused by the cuts now, and in the future, are fully known.
"Only residents can tell of their own experience. It is no use ignoring the situation, then complaining later they have been affected, it will be too late then.
"It is residents’ time to act, sign the petitions and help the council present a good case when the minister comes to the Island in the near future.
"All businesses in Brading have the petitions, just call in and sign up. Spread the word, let’s not be apathetic as the situation is certainly serious." Brading Town Council voted unanimously at its meeting last Thursday to support the Fight for the Wight campaign.
Copies of the petition are available in the Brading Centre for residents to sign.
Petitions are also available in all of the businesses in Brading which are backing the campaign.
These include The Yarbridge Inn, The Wheatsheaf Inn, Kynges Well, The Bugle Inn, Brothers of Brading, Brading Costcutters, Waxworks Cafe, The Lilliput Antique Doll and Toy Museum, Ann’s Hair Studio, Beech Grove Surgery, Turnbull and Maton Estate Agents, Wight Island Escapes, Brading Roman Villa, and The Old Boat House Yoga Studio.
