Call to protect war memorials

Thursday, November 3, 2011 - 13:55

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to protect war memorials and ensure the names of the war dead are never forgotten.
In a bid to combat the theft of metal plaques from war memorials, custodians are being urged by the War Memorials Trust to register for the Memoriam 2014 project and protect memorials with SmartWater — a UV liquid used to identify stolen property.
The crime prevention liquid is being made available free by The SmartWater Foundation.
War Memorials Trust regional volunteer, Geoff Allan, said: "The war memorials in our area offer an important insight into our military and social history. A theft from a war memorial is an attack on the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"We are fortunate here on the Island we do not suffer the level of theft and vandalism witnessed on the mainland but nevertheless we should not be complacent.
"There are perhaps ten Island memorials with metal plaques that are potentially at risk and any steps taken to protect them should be encouraged."
