Christmas fair called off

AN ANNUAL Isle of Wight Christmas fair, lights switch on and winter carnival due to be held in Newport tomorrow (Saturday) have been cancelled due to a forecast for stormy weather.

Newport Parish Council, which organised the events, pulled the plug this morning following an emergency meeting.

Parish clerk Maxine Yule said: "We took the decision in light of the forecast for more bad weather tomorrow. It’s very sad because people have put a lot of effort into organising it, but the weather has beaten us."

The traditional Christmas Fair was due to be held in St Thomas and St James’ Squares, followed by the countdown and big Christmas lights switch on and a carnival, which would have included a lantern parade.

"We would like to rebook the event, but it is something we cannot commit to because there are a lot of things to put in place.

"However, it is an issue we will be discussing today and over the weekend," said Mrs Yule.
