THE COMMUNITY will help repair the damage at Smallbrook Stadium tomorrow (Thursday) after vandals broke in several times over the weekend.

On Friday evening the track shop, office, referee box and outbuildings were targeted, and communication equipment, petty cash, paperwork, and a box of keys were stolen.

The thieves tried to break into the premier lounge on Sunday evening but were intercepted by a security guard.

On Monday, volunteers discovered the thieves had also broken into the cafe.

Barry Bishop, chairman of Island Speedway, said everyone invovled with Smallbrook was devastated by the attacks.

"It broke my heart, to tell the truth," he said.

"It is so painful, not because of the £500 or so that will be need to spent on repairs, but because everyone bar one person is a volunteer here and we have worked hard to restore this place.

"We have built it into something we are proud of and people have sacrificed so much to do this for the Isle of Wight, so for someone from the Isle of Wight to do this to us is awful."

Volunteers will be working to repair the damage between 5pm and 9pm.

Barry said: "Everyone is welcome. Please bring tools and warm clothing and let's show that break-ins to this fantastic community stadium cannot be tolerated."

Anyone with information about the break-ins can call police on 101.
