The environmental benefits of using reusable nappies are being demonstrated in Bishop's Stortford tomorrow (Thursday).

Prompted by growing concerns at how quickly landfill sites are filled up has prompted East Herts District Council to play its part in this week's Real Nappy Week.

The council's recycling team, the Three Counties Real Nappy Network, Modern Baby magazine and Lollipop will be showing the environmental benefits of using reusable nappies.

Disposable nappies make up four per cent of all household waste and their difficult disposal costs local authorities £40m per year.

A huge 94 per cent of them end up in landfill sites where they take generations to break down and some parts of the plastic last indefinitely.

Unlike the traditional but fussy terry nappies, the latest reusable nappies come colourfully patterned with velcro fastners and flushable biodegradable liners which allow solid waste to be disposed of hygienically.

To find out more about the Real Nappy Campaign go along and speak to representatives supporting the campaign at Jackson Square, Bishop's Stortford (opposite Morrelli's Coffee shop) from 9am to 5.30pm.
