Dance to back violence victims

A DANCE event to protest against violence against women and raise cash for the Isle of Wight Women’s Refuge, is being held in Newport tomorrow (Thursday).

The Nia on the Wight dance group will add its support to the One Billion Rising worldwide event taking place across the globe where men and women are set to demonstrate against violence against women.

The event is also being held to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the founding of V-Day, a global activist movement that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of The Vagina Monologues — the award-winning play by Eve Ensler.

To date, the V-Day movement has raised more than $90m and educated millions about violence against women.

Nia on the Wight will be joining them and other Nia dance classes around the world to add their support, solidarity and to dance for a good cause.

The dance will take place at 5.30pm on Thursday, February 14, at the Scout Hall, Woodbine Close, Newport. All money raised will be donated to the Island women’s refuge.

So, Mr Hines, are you suggesting that this year there will be no way of telling whether Ms Amber Beard has an . . . ?

It is my understanding that the delightful Ms Amber Beard will be performing in The Vagina Monologues, following on from her triumphant performance in Calendar Girls last year. Whilst I appreciate that this is a story about a very worthwhile cause - and may I wish all involved the best of luck - we should also note that Ms Beard and the remainder of her troupe failed to be recognised in the Isle of Wight theatre awards last year, which was an utter travesty, and has not been forgotten. Hopefully this year justice will be done, and in the name of a worthwhile cause too! Before you get too excited, fellas, unfortunately the Vagina Monologues will apparently be performed fully clothed!
