FIREFIGHTERS were called to an Isle of Wight supermarket this evening (Monday).

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to Tesco in Brading Road, Ryde, at around 7.55pm when a burning smell was reported.

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said that at 8.11pm the lobby area was described as smoke-logged and thermal imaging cameras were being used to try to discover the source.

She said there was no report of any flames.

Shoppers were evacuated from the store.

*At 9.34pm, a spokeswoman said firefighters had investigated the area with staff, but were unable to find the cause of the smoke, and they had left the scene at 8.48pm.
