FREEZING temperatures and a forecast for rain have led to the Isle of Wight Council urging motorists to take extra care on the roads today (Tuesday) and tomorrow.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesman said: "Temperatures are due to drop below freezing from 4pm tonight and with rain forecast overnight, it is likely that black ice will form across the network, possibly even on treated routes.
"The network was salted last night so residual levels will offer protection against the initial freezing temperatures but the rain, if it arrives, could reduce the effectiveness of the salt.
"The timing of any gritting is therefore crucial and highways staff will continue to monitor the situation and decide when to grit most effectively depending on the updated forecast this evening."
The council said it would be using Twitter and Facebook to keep people updated.

Somebody lost it at Compton lodge S-bend again a couple of hours ago.I heard the skid and crash(I was climbing up the cliff steps) but when I got there they had driven off leaving great clods of earth and frozen mud in the road.I think it was ice on the bend, the sun did not shine on that bit of the corner. When I drove down Afton hill afterwards it was still icy at the sides of the raod, although it had been gritted and grip was good.

Still no salting and gritting on Appleford Road and Bleak Down despite all the accidents.
