Bexley Swimming Club was put firmly on the English map when its six-strong squad competed in the National Age Group Championships at Sheffield.

In what was ranked as the club's best-ever overall display at the championships, two of its swimmers came home with gold and silver medals each.

Competing in the 12-year-old category, Matthew Shead and Jade Barclay stole the show with magnificent swims.

Matthew won gold in the 200-metre breaststroke final, clocking 2mins 45.17sec, and then took silver in the 50-metre breaststroke event in 35.07sec.

Jade emulated Matthew's medal-winniong achievement by winning gold in the 200-metre butterfly in 2mins 33.81sec and silver in the 100 metres of the same stroke in 1min 11.28s.

Including points accumulated from the other events, which Jade and Matthew entered, they finished fifth and eighth overall.

Team-mate Christopher Scott took part in four events and his best place was to finish ninth in the 15-year-old butterfly race over 100 metres, when he clocked 1m 2.20sec.

Personal bests were made by three of the club's other swimmers.

Katie Howes clocked 35.95sec in the 14-year-olds' breaststroke event over 50 metres and followed up with 1min 19.44sec in the 100 metres.
