Gloria Minghella dies

STALWART of many Isle of Wight organisations for decades, Gloria Minghella, died yesterday (Thursday) morning at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

Mrs Minghella, who with her husband Eddie co-founded Minghella’s Ice Cream at Wootton had been ill for over a year.

In 2007 that Mrs Minghella, of Ryde, was made MBE for her services to the community, a year before the sudden death of her Oscar-winning film director son, Anthony.

She played a leading role in numerous Isle of Wight organisations and charities and had been a Isle of Wight Deputy Lord Lieutenant.

Mrs Minghella, who was aged 83, leaves her husband, acclaimed scriptwriter son, Dominic, and three daughters.

Gioia runs the family ice cream business, Loretta is the director of Christian Aid and Edana has achieved recognition as a jazz performer.

Parish priest Ftr Anthony Glaysher, who was with the family at the hospice, said: "Our love and prayers are with the family of a remarkable woman."

Writing on his website, Dominic Minghella said yesterday (Thursday): "Devastated to have to report the loss of my extraordinary Mum, Gloria, who died earlier today.

"It has been a day of total heartbreak — and of much counting of blessings.

"Her warmth, her love, her intelligence, her grace, her delicious turn of phrase...  It’s a long and wonderful list.

"You can imagine our pain. You cannot imagine our pride."

*In this week's County Press it has been incorrectly reported that Mrs Minghella was aged 93.

My condolences to the Minghellas and to our friends on the Island who knew her and Eddie very well. My late Wife Roberta Whipple and I had the pleasure to spend two wonderful evenings with Mrs. MINGHELLA and Eddie. It was a highlight of my wife's life. Gloria is now resting with Anthony. God Bless You!

Gloria Minghella will be fondly remembered by all the volunteers in our CCT Charity shop. She always had a kind word of encouragement to everyone.
She was an inspiration as will be her memory.

I feel desperately sorry for the Minghella family in their sad loss. I was privileged to come into contact with this incredible and amazing lady a few times. The island has lost a great champion, a wonderful role model and a truly inspirational character. They don't make them like her any more, and we will all miss her. My sincere condolences to her wonderful family.

Everyone at Quay Arts is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Gloria, the matriarch of the Islands most creative family. We are proud to have the Minghella name on our theatre, and send our best wishes to the family at this sad time. When Anthony lifted that Oscar and said it was a great day for the Isle of Wight, the world heard about the creativity of our wonderful Island – and Gloria was at the heart of that. Many of the photographs accompanying this sad news are of Gloria in our cafe - which speaks volumes about her support for us as the creative charity on the Island. Rest in peace.

Lovely lady, and a wonderful family, a real driving force in setting up the Citizens Advice Bureau on the Island.
Many summers in the 1970's I enjoyed an ice cream from the Mayfair Cafe in Ryde
God bless x
