HERTFORDSHIRE's mounting waste problem is set to be tackled in the council's first-ever waste blueprint.

The eco-friendly move follows last Tuesday's fourth WasteAware seminar when almost 100 councillors and officers from 10 councils, including east Herts, met at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield.

They heard a presentation from consultants, Enviros Aspinwall, who are being set the task of bring forward ways to develop new and more sustainable ways of dealing with the county's massive levels of household and commercial waste.

Councillors agreed that the consultants' proposed strategy represented a starting point for broader discussion between the councils.

They also agreed to set up a joint working group to develop and refine the strategy which will be subject to public consultation later this year.
