JON Platt, the father at the centre of the Supreme Court battle with the Isle of Wight Council and Department for Education over school holiday fines, has said he is not confident of victory after today's (Tuesday) hearing.

Speaking to the Isle of Wight County Press after the day-long hearing in London, Mr Platt, told the County Press: "If I was a betting man, I would say it is going to go against us."

Mr Platt praised his legal team, but said lawyers for the DfE and the Isle of Wight Council had also made strong representations.

He highlighted concerns about the impact of the case on parents across the country, after suggestions in court that the law could be interpreted in a way that would make it a criminal offence for a child to even be late to school, not just absent.

Mr Platt's team argued that such an interpretation would be 'absurd' however Mr Platt said he was 'not at all confident' of which way the case would go.

The case has been adjourned for the Supreme Court justices to make a decision — which could take weeks.
