Organisers of Croydon's second Asian Mela on Sunday (July19) are confident there will be no sign of the isolated violent clashes which marred last year's event.

Up to double last year's 8,000 visitors could attend the massive Asian family festival celebration and Croydon Council and Croydon Asian Academy of Art and Culture have promised safety is of "paramount importance".

Security has been stepped up with professional stewards and council safety officers as well as a larger police presence. Four separate incidents including clashes between between youths spoiled the day for some last year, but organiser Mohammed Aslam said he was looking forward to a family day of fun.

"We have spent three months covering all the safety aspects and have spent hours making sure every angle is explored. Security is of paramount importance and we will have fire safety officers, council safety officers, professional stewards and most importantly, the police. Nothing is being left to chance," he said.

The Mela takes place in Norbury Park, off Norbury Avenue and Green Lane from 1-8pm.Organisers urge those attending to use public transport but some free parking will be available in Kensington Avenue playing fields and Norwood Grove Park.
