How typical it is to read that swimmers face an uncertain future now that a private company looks poised to take over the day-to day-running of Hatch End Pool ( 'Swimmers fight for pool's future' Times, Jan 17).

I, too, am a swimmer who likes to begin each day with a few lengths of the pool. It is refreshing and invigorating before another tough day in the office.

To be told that the right to be able to swim is 'a privilege' is an insult and hardly comes as a reassurance to the clubs and people trying to safeguard the future of the pool.

At a time when big business rides roughshod over the everyday requirements of the little people, dictating what they can and can't do, this latest takeover is yet another slap in the face.

I hope that the doubts which exist over the future use of the pool are misplaced, that negotiations between the two parties can soon be resolved to everyone's satisfaction and that swimming in the borough can continue for the benefit of all generations.

Otherwise, the privileged may be forced to up roots and move away from the borough or, worse, seek refuge in the muddy waters of the Thames!
