Mavis Steele MBE, now in her 70th year, returned on Sunday to the area where she started playing bowls 50 years ago when she was honoured at the Century Club during the Middlesex Ladies' annual Benevolent Fund competition day.

Although no longer living locally, she is very well known, having worked for Kodak for 35 years while living in Kenton. She also played for the now defunct Watling BC, was several times national champion, and represented England regularly for 40 years.

Before play began, Mavis was presented with a bouquet by the County's youngest ever president Sue Bard-Bodek in recognition of her long spell as an international and immediately pronounced that she had no intention of retiring as a bowler. Century's own Audrey Newell was a member of the afternoon's winning rink.

Century's men are no longer interested in two competitions following weekend defeats.

Local rivals Wealdstone won an exciting EBA Double Fours third round match by three shots on Saturday. Century's Dave Robson lost out to Mick O'Grady, although Derek Russell's two-shot victory over Wealdstone's Richard Kirk kept the visitors in the hunt until the end.

It wasn't so close on Sunday when Century lost on three of the four rinks against Paddington in the London and Southern Counties Challenge competition.

But with lead Pete Wilcock playing superbly, Dave Robson's rink outbowled Paddington's England international Steve Halmai.

Century Ladies again failed to progress beyond the first round of the Travelsphere National Club competition, losing out this time away to Edmonton, although Sylvia Bramley won her singles element of the competition.

In the Brent League, the ladies' triple led by Joyce Fletcher had a good win against Roundwood Park.

The men played a four-rink friendly away to Kodak, and although they lost by four shots, the match could have been won but for a disaster which befell Reg Theobold's rink on the 20th end, when they dropped the maximum eight shots. Charlie McCarthy skipped Century's only winning rink.
