Nick Nieland became the eighth Shaftesbury Barnet athlete to be included in the British team for the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, when the final selections were announced on Monday.

Nieland was beaten in the javelin by Mark Roberson in the world trials at Birmingham but Nieland had achieved the qualifying distance of 82.50 metres and Roberson hadn't.

Roberson had his last chance in the British Grand Prix at Crystal Palace but was well short with 76.08m, when ninth behind Nieland, eighth with 76.92m.

And so Nieland will be on his way to Canada, joining Steve Backley and Mick Hill.

Though his last two efforts have been disappointing (77.91m at Birmingham and almost a metre less at Crystal Palace), Nieland has a seasons's best of 82.50m and an all-time best of 85.09m.

He joins Larry Achike, Anthony Whiteman, Shani Anderson, Abi Oyepitan, Catherine Murphy and Lee McConnell in the team for the world championships.

Originally chosen only for the relays, Anderson, Oyepitan and Murphy are also in the individual events.

Anderson and Oyepitan contest the 100m and Murphy runs over 400m.

Achike was Shaftesbury's outstanding performer in the British Grand Prix with a season's best of 17.21m, not far short of his career best 17.30.

A brilliant effort, it earned him second place behind world record holder Jonathan Edwards (17.29), and ahead of Phillips Idowu (17.05).

"I didn't quite get it right it could have been close to 17.50m," said Achike.

Oyepitan and Murphy both finished fifth in hot company.

Oyepitan, the fastest British girl this season with 11.29sec for the 100m, never got going and clocked 11.72sec. In the 400m, Murphy clocked 52.65sec.

Whiteman faced the world's top two, Hicham El Guerrouj and Nyen in the Emsley Carr mile and finished eighth in 3min 55.16sec. El Guerrouj won in 3min 49.41sec.
