A MAN has died following a car accident in Newport.

The accident in Holyrood Street occured at about 1.10pm on Monday, when a Fiat collided with a stationary Vauxhall Omega near the junction with Crocker Street.

Police were called and the road was closed while emergency services gave treatment to a casualty.

The road re-opened at around 2.40pm.

Police said the driver of the Fiat, a man in his 70s, was given medical treatment at the scene and was taken to St Mary's Hospital by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police are investigating  whether he suffered a medical episode at the wheel. No-one else was injured.

Officers said they would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision, or the Fiat being driven prior to the accident.
