WALKERS in Crystal Palace Park were horrified to discover dozens of razor blades and pieces of sharp metal embedded in a footpath.

The discovery was made shortly after the newly-built footpath was completed.

People taking their dogs out for walks last week stumbled across what they describe as a "serious health hazard".

The items were also found near a children's play club sparking fears for the safety of youngsters using the park.

Angry park users say the blades posed a health risk.

Alison Fletcher, 34, of Lawrie Park, Sydenham, who walks her dog in the park every morning, said: "We are all shocked by what we found as this is so dangerous. What concerned us the most is there is a children's playground nearby and kids use this footpath all the time. The threat to public safety is enormous.

"We are all in the dark over where they have all come from but we are determined to get to the bottom of it."

Following the discovery, police and park rangers were notified and the items removed.

Tests by Bromley Council have revealed the objects were hospital equipment but it is a mystery how they got there.

A council spokesman said: "This is a strange one-off. I must admit I have never come across anything like it before.

"As soon as it was reported, the area was cleared to maintain public safety. It certainly didn't come from the work being carried out in the area and we are seeking information on how they got there.

"Anyone with information should contact the park rangers."
