Pupils at Westfields Primary joined the borough's first 'walking bus' to make their journey to school on Tuesday.
Volunteers met the children at designated bus stops along a half-mile route to the school and supervised them on the walk to Westfields Avenue.
Safety education officers at Richmond Council devised the walking bus scheme and have provided training and fluorescent jackets for all the volunteer walkers. The council hopes the scheme will be copied by other schools in the borough and eliminate some of the traffic from school runs.
