Murder probe launched after street attack victim dies

A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man who was assaulted in Newport died this morning after sustaining serious head injuries.

The 49-year-old man was found just before 4.30am on Sunday morning and was taken to Southampton General Hospital.

Police confirmed he died this morning and that they were investigating the circumstances of his death.

Two 20-year-old men and a 21-year-old man were originally arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remain in custody being questioned on suspicion of murder.

Anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or has any information should contact the police on 101 quoting Operation Smooth.

* Police have confirmed the identity of the man who died as Gary Stacey, 49, of Carisbrooke. A post mortem will take place this afternoon (Monday).

A 20-year-old man and 21-year-old man who were arrested in connection with the incident have been released without charge and a 20-year-old man remains in custody and is being questioned on suspicion of murder.
