THE Isle of Wight’s Rural Community Council has a new name.

Community Action Isle of Wight is now the name of the organisation — a move designed to reflect what it does and the fact it has never been a council or solely rurally focused.

It will continue to be run by voluntary trustees nominated from its 70-plus voluntary and community groups.

Community Action chief executive Mike Bulpitt said: "We really felt a new name was needed which better demonstrated who we are and what we’re about and, given the even wider variety of things we’re doing, now was the right time to make the change."

Community Action Isle of Wight exists to support the 1,500 or more Island voluntary and community organisations.

It helps groups with training and advice and its volunteer drivers provide the Optio voluntary car service, enabling older and less mobile residents to get to medical and other appointments. It also encourages healthy lifestyles through its health trainers and other services.

In the last 18 months, it has provided the umbrella under which Bembridge and Brighstone libraries have been maintained through the commitment of volunteers and has set up a trading arm, Island Community Ventures, to provide valued services that also generate some profits to invest in its charitable work.

Ventures include Godshill village shop and post office and a bulk-buying heating oil scheme. It also recently took over Scarrots Lane Bakery in Newport.
