As well as saving on money and the environment, energy efficiency can also keep you fit -- as seven Hertsmere residents recently discovered.

Vice-chairman of the council's environment and economic development committee, Councillor Ann Harrison, awarded the winners of Hertsmere Borough Council's energy survey with their prizes at a ceremony held in Potters Bar's Furzefield Centre on Monday.

More than 900 questionnaires, sent out in the spring edition of Hertsmere News, were completed, returned to the council and entered into a prize drawn. The first prize worth £420 of membership to Beaumont's Health Club, based at both Hawksmoor and the Furzefield Centre, was won by Mr Leslie Ayre from Potters Bar. The six runners-up, all of whom won family membership to Hertsmere leisure centres, were: Mrs D Curtis of Greenside in Borehamwood; Mr M Taylor of Bushey; Mr Roger Gray of Potters Bar; Mr E Jarvis of Hartforde Road, Borehamwood; Mrs E Rostafinski of Kendalls Close in Radlett and Mr E Cunningham of Bushey.

The results of the questionnaires will enable the council to measure how efficient Hertsmere homes are, and will contribute to an energy conservation report to be submitted to the Government which will identify ways of reducing residential energy consumption by 30 per cent over the next ten years.
