ORGANISERS of a women's refuge that was completely stripped of its contents last month are awaiting news from insurance assessors to hear whether it can get back on its feet again.

St Albans Women's Refuge (SAWR) was discovered two weeks ago with all of its furniture, thought to be worth around £25,000, missing and around £10,000 of damage done to it.

The house, which stands on the borders of St Albans and Hertsmere, had been empty since the middle of December last year and occupants were due to move back in later this month.

The theft and damage done to the property, however, has put on hold plans to move back in until the refuge hears whether all of the items taken and damage done is covered by insurance.

The theft and damage to the inside of the house took place at some point between December 15 last year and January 31. Police are investigating the incident.

Refuge chairman Maralyn Pollard said: "It was only discovered when one of the members of staff went over to the house and found they couldn't get in because the thieves had bolted the front door after getting in.

"But when they did they found the place had been completely gutted.

"We were absolutely devastated because we were hoping to move back in within the next few weeks, but we can't do it now because it's just completely empty."

The house was left bereft of furniture, electrical equipment, kitchen utensils and even lightbulbs.

It is one of several properties run by the SAWR, an organisation that marked its 20th anniversary last year and which provides women with support and safe places to stay.

The house gives emergency accommodation to four families at a time who are fleeing from domestic violence.

Women who stay there also have access to a range of support services, including help with childcare and support with legal proceedings.

Until the refuge hears whether insurance assessors have recommended the complete replacement of the furniture and items taken, however, its work has been put on hold.
