The young people of Harrow will soon have no excuse for not knowing exactly where they stand with the police.

A card setting out their legal rights and responsibilities is to be given to everyone aged from 12 to 16 in the borough.

The poket-sized, fold-out card, which was officially launched at the Civic Centre on Friday, is the result of a pioneering joint initiative between Harrow police and Harrow Council, and was funded with the help of £500-worth of sponsorship from the Times Series.

About 20,000 copies are being distributed through high schools, libraries, youth and community centres and the Civic Centre.

Harrow's community safety strategy group (CSSG) was told on Thursday that the card would probably not have been possible without the support of the Times Series.

A sponsor is now being sought for a second card, covering bullying and mugging. Others in the series will deal with drugs and alcohol and a charter for young people.

Tom Cooper, manager of the council's youth and community service said: "Thanks to the dedication of all parties, we are able to move forward with the next card in the series with enthusiam and commitment."

Councillor Anne Swaine, chairman of the CSSG praised the Times Series's support for the project.
