DEMONSTRATORS who had set up camp near the closed Vestas wind turbine factory were ordered to leave the area by police early this morning (Tuesday).

Around 13 people were told to leave by officers from Hampshire Constabulary after being issued with warnings over trespass. No one was arrested.

But police said they would take action if anyone tried to prevent blades being moved from the site.

The protesters had set up camp beside the Cowes to Newport cycleway in protest at the closure of the Vestas plant, which took place in August.

Hampshire Constabulary’s Isle of Wight Commander, Chief Supt David Thomas, said: "Hampshire Constabulary can confirm police officers carried out a planned operation at approximately 6.30am this morning on land near the Vestas wind turbine blade factory, Newport, where a protest over the factory’s closure was taking place.

"Officers issued warnings under section 69 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to approximately 13 people suspected of having committed, committing, or about to commit, criminal offences of aggravated trespass. These protestors left the area voluntarily and peacefully. No arrests were made.

"A number of items of property were seized and secured at the scene of the protest to prevent loss or damage. Hampshire Constabulary has already returned some items, and the remainder is available for collection from Newport Police Station.

"Hampshire Constabulary’s role is to monitor the situation, ensure public safety and order, prevent and investigate any reported crimes, and recognise and where possible facilitate peaceful protests outside the factory.

"If criminal offences are committed in an effort to prevent turbine blades from being removed from Vestas, the police will take appropriate action to bring offenders to justice."
