Powerful reminder of drink-driving's fatal consequences

The car in which Isle of Wight youngster Evey Staley was travelling when she was involved in a fatal car accident.

THE wrecked car involved in the crash that claimed the life of Isle of Wight youngster Evey Staley will be displayed over coming days.

Police hope the car — to be displayed in Newport on Thursday and Saturday and Cowes on Friday — will send a powerful message about the risks of getting behind the wheel when unfit through drink or drugs.

The campaign was launched last Friday and Evey’s story is to play a central role, with officers wearing purple ribbons as a reminder of her death last year, when a drunk driver who had been smoking cannabis smashed into the car she was travelling in with her parents.

Insp Andy Storey said: "If anyone thinks that driving while impaired has no consequences then they should take a look at the vehicle that is being used in this display.

"There can be no more powerful reminder that impaired driving costs lives and ruins many others.

"If you are going out this Christmas and drinking, then please ensure that you have a means of getting home that does not involve you doing the driving."

He said Isle of Wight police had already caught one driver who was over the limit and another who was unfit to drive.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer Steve Apter said they were fully behind the campaign.

"I cannot begin to imagine both the physical and emotional suffering the Staley family went through following the collision and they deserve upmost respect and credit for supporting the campaign by allowing their actual vehicle involved that night to be displayed," he said.
