AN ISLE of Wight woman was the centre of a social media frenzy when President Donald Trump tweeted her, thinking she was the Prime Minister.

Theresa May Scrivener, 41, from Newport, who has the Twitter handle @theresamay, received the tweet on Wednesday night, but didn't discover the presidential blunder until the morning.

Theresa, who now lives in Bognor Regis, couldn't leave her house the next day because she had reporters camped outside all day.

Since the gaffe, she has gained more than 1,300 followers and has received countless tweets.

"I find it quite funny," Theresa said. "But I think he needs to think a bit more. I'm lucky he didn't tweet me to say he was going to war with North Korea."

Theresa hasn't yet received an apology from the White House, but said she doesn't hold out much hope for one.

"This is one of the most powerful men in the world. I don't think he realises the hassle this has caused.

"My daughter had a doctors appointment, but we had to do a phone consultation because I didn't want to take her out and have all the reporters in her face.

"I have had so many tweets that I can't read them all. I think I would be there all day if I tried."

The tweet came about because the US president had retweeted a series of anti-Muslim videos from far-right group Britain First on Wednesday and Prime Minister Theresa May's office released a statement saying it was wrong for the president to have retweeted the videos.

President Trump replied on Twitter: "Theresa @theresamay, don't focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!"

Unfortunately, he tagged the wrong Theresa May.

She said this is not the first time she has been mistaken on Twitter for the Prime Minister, whose handle is @theresa_may.

"I had the name on Twitter before she became Prime Minister. I am not changing it now," she said.
