Round the Island with a fridge

If you see Jonathan White out on the Island with his fridge, please give him a lift.

AN AA patrolman has hit on a cool way of raising money for Cancer Research — he plans to hitchhike around the Isle of Wight with a fridge — inspired by comedian Tony Hawks.

Former Medina High School pupil, Jonathan White, 37, will be spending the Easter break circumnavigating the Isle of Wight with his table-top fridge, and hopes his reception from residents will be far from frosty.

Jonathan, who now lives in Bursledon, near Southampton, is being backed in his wacky fund-raising marathon by the popular comedian.

He hit on the idea of the fridge challenge after reading Mr Hawks’ book, Round Ireland With a Fridge, which told the story of how he had visited Ireland and was amazed to see a man standing by the side of a road with a fridge trying to get a lift.

Mr Hawks was then bet £100 by a friend he could not hitchhike round Ireland in a month with a fridge and the book details his hilarious exploits along the way.

Jonathan, whose mother-in-law has been given 18 months to live after being diagnosed with cancer, also lost a work colleague to cancer aged just 29.

He has already raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research by having his ponytail removed and his hair shaved to a grade two after the first dance at his wedding in June last year.

He said: "I thought it was the type of weird and wacky idea that would make a great charity fund-raiser."

His inspiration, Tony Hawks said: "His act of gross stupidity is heroic and should be supported. I wish him all the best.

Jonathan said: "I intend to pitch a tent each night so any hotel willing to lend me a room for half an hour to take a shower and have a shave would be publicised on my Facebook page, as would any pub or sandwich shop willing to give me a sandwich and a cuppa."

Details of Jonathan’s trek will be available at www.facebook.com/roundtheislandwithafridge

You can see how Mr Hawks faired on his journey in the film based on his book, which is currently available on the BBC iPlayer
