A MAN sustained head and facial injuries following an alleged assault in Newport today (Friday).
One witness told the Isle of Wight County Press he saw two men arguing near St James' Square, when one headbutted the other before striking him with a crash helmet.
He was left bleeding from his injuries.
The witness, who asked not to be named, said: "He had started to walk away, then he turned and swung the crash helmet and hit him in the face. There was an almighty crack, it was pretty nasty.
"They both looked quite young, maybe in their late teens."
An Isle of Wight Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed paramedics were called to the scene, to treat a man with head injuries, at 1.58pm.
A spokesman from the Isle of Wight police said: "I can confirm that we were called at 2.20pm today by ambulance service reporting an assault on St James Square in Newport.

"It was reported that a 17-year-old boy had been assaulted, and I can confirm it was reported to us that a motorcycle helmet was used during the assault. The injured person has been taken to St Mary's Hospital.
"Enquiries are on-going and no arrests have been made."
