Hendon 23 Wembley 13

Herts/Middlesex League Division 2

After 14 successive league losses, Hendon broke their duck with a win over Wembley on Saturday. It was followed by a lengthy celebration at the The Bodhran pub, in Vivian Avenue, Hendon, the clubs sponsor.

Said jubilant stalwart Micky Arber: "We had been unlucky to lose our previous three matches, but now that the boys have got the taste of a win, the first since we beat Harrow in the Middlesex Cup early in the season, maybe we can still save ourselves from relegation, with three matches to go."

Hendon showed their battling qualities. After going 10-0 down Hendon were on terms 13-13 at half-time, with tries by Peter Love and David Simpson and a penalty by John Diviney.

With the slope in their favour, Hendon got well on top in the second period. Full-back Damian Morris made an interception on his own 22 and dashed through for a try, converted by Diviney for a 20-13 lead. Then Diviney added a penalty to assure Hendon of victory.

Their next league game is at Old Haberdashers on Saturday, March 10.
