THE chairman of the Isle of Wight Council has paid tribute to former councillor David Knowles, who died last week.

Cllr Ian Ward said the former Ryde mayor was 'a lovely man.'

Speaking at last night’s full council meeting, he said: "David was one of the first to welcome me to the council chamber and offer advice after I was elected. Over the last several years we had plenty of banter. I was very sorry to hear of his passing."

Cllr Ward said he had written to Mr Knowles' widow offering condolences on behalf of all council members.
