TRIBUTES have been paid by the chairman of the Isle of Wight Labour Party, after a Labour MEP candidate killed was killed in a bombing in Afghanistan.

Del Singh, who hoped to represent the Isle of Wight as a south east MEP, was among the victims of an attack on a Kabul restaurant last week.

Isle of Wight Labour Party chair Deborah Gardiner said: "Many Labour Party members met Del either individually during his canvassing visits or at the selection meetings. We were particularly struck by his passion and commitment to make a difference, and that was what he was doing in Kabul — working for peace.

"In a short period he had built a lot of respect from amongst Island party members who he had hoped to represent in the European Parliament. His enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and passion for change was particularly striking . Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

Mr Singh was from Southampton and worked as International Development Specialist, who had managed EU and UN projects in post-conflict countries, including Afghanistan, Palestine, Libya and Sierra Leone.
