Turbine plan rejected

PLANS to build a 74 metre high wind turbine near Newport were rejected by Isle of Wight councillors last night (Monday).

The plans had been recommended for conditional approval by officers, however that advice changed last night.

Officers said the applicant had not provided additional noise monitoring as requested, leading to a recommendation for refusal.

Head of planning Bill Murphy said the noise issue was the only reason for recommending refusal, however the planning committee also heard from objectors who claimed the wind turbine would dominate the landscape and nearby properties, without providing benefits.

Local member John Hobart said people were not against renewable energy, but the landscape needed to be considered.

Councillors voted seven to two to reject the application on grounds of noise and visual impact on the closest property at Trumor Feeds, Forest Road.

'Green terrorists.' Ha ha ha ha, that's a beauty! Haven't heard that since the sixties. I love the antiquated charm of old Isle of Wight - full of eccentrics lol.

You obviously have as much expertise and knowledge about Planning as you do about running a golf club.

Comparing Cheverton with Batty(sic) Haunt Lane, is akin to comparing VGC with a proper Golf Club like Sandown and Shanklin, which is where most of your members now are.

What's the membership now, down to about 50?

Many thanks to Mr Prescott for the namecheck the other day.

I'm sorry that you got so emotional - it must have been your lambasting of the Planning Officers that cause your emotions to run so!

The applicants knew perfectly well what they were doing in not submitting the additional noise data; they have read the Cheverton Inspector's decision with regard to noise and decided that going straight to the Inspector (which they will) will result in this decision being overturned on Appeal. Let's face it, the Committee would have invented any excuse to refuse the application and the Officers' obviously think that they will have great difficulty in defending the rejection at Appeal which, incidentally, will cost taxpayers many tens of thousands of pounds.

As for the golf club - we do not share your optimism!

I.B., I was under the obviously mistaken impression that to comment on here, one had to register with ones own name, but knowing the editiors penchant for all things "green", I guess he has "let you away with it".

Let us "move forward" then.

As an obvious supporter of these industrial machines, you will no doubt have read the Renewable Energy Foundations article on the work by Professor Gordon Hughes (another pro-renewable educationalist), which now states that the 20-25 years lifespan of industrial wind turbines is about TEN YEARS out.

According to the good Profs research (something that pro-wind supporters NEVER do), they only last between 10-15 years.

Well, I never!
He goes on to say his study has important implications for the UK and that "The structure of contracts should be modified should be modified since FEW WIND FARMS WILL OPERATE FOR MORE THAN 12 -15 YEARS"
The research can be found here:

Yvonne, thank you for your kind comments, but without wishing to be controversial, it matters not one jot that the applicants live in Cayman.

In the same way that Prime Minister Camerons father-in-law cannot be held to blame for availing himself of the stupid huge subsidies offered to landowners.

Doesn't matter if you are Labour, Conservative, Lib Dem or Green, or if you are a millionaire or a tenant farmer.
You should NOT BE ALLOWED to profit by just being the landowner to the detriment of all of your neighbours.

Fortunately, the green terrorists seem to have had their say, or at least there has been nothing to contradict what I and Mike and others have already said.

I would certainly concede that just because you HAVE money, as in the Moons case, it does not necessarily follow that you should trump your fellow residents, something which seems to have eluded the seemingly socialist Messrs. Rollingsworth and Hampshire!
