Peter Weller, who runs Wellers Travel Worldchoice, of Stratheden Parade, Blackheath, is the third generation of Wellers to work in the family firm, which has specialised in travel and travel-related merchandise since the beginning of the 20th century.

The business began as a saddlery and leather merchants in 1900, run by Percy Weller, Peter's grandfather.

By 1925, Wellers was also operating as a travel company supplying cheap day-trips - mainly to the coast in open-topped coaches called Charabancs.

At first, local coach company Timpsons of Catford supplied the vehicles.

Later, in the 1930s, Lewis Coaches took over the role.

After Percy Weller's death in 1935, his wife, Ethel, ran the firm, managing it single-handedly during the war, until her son, Frank, and his wife, Dorothy, took over in 1945.

In 1966, Wellers began to offer package holidays and became members of ABTA. Frank and Dorothy retired 10 years ago and their son, Peter, now manages the company.

Wellers Travel Worldchoice is still an independently-owned travel agent. It joined the Worldchoice network six years ago in order to obtain access to a wider selection of holidays and tour operators.

As well as offering the usual selection of package holidays, the company assists clients in choosing from a variety of special-interest holiday, such as skiing, horse riding, sailing and painting, while still offering coach travel with Lewis Coaches and specialising in national and international coach and rail travel.

Peter Weller says: "We pride ourselves on our ability to provide a friendly, personal service to all our customers, many of whom have been coming here to book their travel with us for years.

"As an independent travel agent, we are able to offer our clients more choice and better value for money overall. We hope we can continue to do so for another 100 years."
