Having been installed only six weeks ago Walker has insisted that the side would not be in their current position had he started at the helm last summer.

"We can only adapt to what was dictated to us and after the poor start to the season, we lost vital games and are in this position because results don't lie.

"At the moment every game is must win and although we have lost our last two games the lads have conducted themselves well and given a lot to the cause," he said.

With three games left to save themselves, Walker has insisted that all three have to be won if they are to catch third bottom Leatherhead, who lie seven points ahead and have a game in hand.

He said: "Because of Hemel Hempstead not having their ground in order only two will go down. But as it is you would need to be a miracle worker to get out of our situation.

"We have to be honest and say this has taken a lot out of the lads and once the season is over I can take stock of things and prepare us for next season," he said.

Rock-bottom Chertsey still have to play Grays, Bishop Stortford and local rivals Staines in the last two weeks of the campaign and are hoping that Leatherhead drop points in their last four games.

"With the finances of the club the situation is we are not a Man United of the league and money does dictate where we are going as a club," said Walker.

Chertsey's plight wasn't helped by the fact that they suffered back-to-back defeats over Easter, losing 3-2 to Worthing (Trevor Canoville and Gavin Murnagh) and Maidenhead 2-0 at York Road where Rob French was sent off at half time after an incident with Brian Connor, where it is alleged that the Maidenhead full-back spat in the face of French.
