OLYMPIC gold medalist Louis Attrill MBE returned to Sandown High School for this year’s Baylink Games, enjoyed by more than 500 primary school pupils.
The former Sandown High School pupil, who won rowing gold at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, presented medals to pupils, who took part in athletics, football, rugby, netball and basketball events.
Nine schools from the Sandown Bay area were involved in the student-led games, staged by Sam Fincham and Jack Hayward, both 14.
With the help of school captain Ben Woodhouse, plus around 250 other students, they created an Olympic-themed event, which featured an opening and closing ceremony and Olympic village.
Newchurch Primary School was particularly successful, winning three of the five sports championships.
In addition to the competitions, the games also included live music from Sandown-based dance group Mas Fusion, plus a range of workshops, such as food tasting, learning zone and art activities.
“It was very much down to the hard work of the students, who helped to make it such a fantastic event. Thanks also go to all the businesses which supported it,” said Lesley Walters, director of specialism at Sandown High School.
