Bishop David Halsey

Bishop of Carlisle David Halsey.

RETIRED Bishop of Carlisle David Halsey, a well-known Seaview resident, died in Norwich on Saturday, aged 90.

Born in Long Ditton, Surrey, on January 27, 1919, he was the youngest of two sons born to to George and Gladys Halsey.

He grew up in London and was educated at King’s School, Wimbledon, and later at King’s College, London.

During the Second World War, he was evacuated to Bristol.

Bishop Halsey continued his studies at Salisbury Theological College, which were completed in Wells, Somerset.

His involvement with the church spanned more than 40 years — from rural parishes in Wiltshire to the suburban and urban posts of Chatham and Bromley.

He served as the Suffragan Bishop of Tonbridge, between 1968 and 1972, and the Bishop of Carlisle, from 1972 to 1989.

On retirement, Bishop Halsey and his wife, Rachel, moved to Seaview.

They were well known in Seaview and St Helens and were members of the Anglican churches of both villages. Bishop Halsey continued to officiate services until about two years ago.

However, his Island connection goes back to 1947, when he proposed to Rachel below the old Seaview Pier. In 1950, the couple bought a bungalow next to his parent’s home in the village.

Bishop Halsey is survived by his wife, four daughters and 15 grandchildren.

His interests included cricket, gardening, reading and walking.

A family funeral for Bishop Halsey will be held in Penrith, Cumbria, next Friday, May 29, followed by a thanksgiving service in Carlisle Cathedral on July 12.
