CRICKET: Bishop's Stortford CC look for a significant improvement on last season's display as they take to the crease for the new campaign.

Last year Stortford finished rock bottom of the Herts League premier division but skipper Ben Debenham is determined that there will be no repeat performance.

He said: 'The best thing to say about last season is that there is plenty of room for improvement. We have been doing a lot of training over the winter in the nets and that has gone well.

'I don't like to set targets but I think we can finish in the top half of the table this year.'

Stortford will look to the talents of promising 19-year-old Australian Darren Wittingham, their new overseas player.

The all-rounder was spotted by Stortford players touring New South Wales and brought back to Hertfordshire.

This year the league goes under the name of the Home Counties East League premier division but the competing teams will be the same as last year, with Hemel Hempstead the reigning champions.

Stortford are due to play two pre-season games on their home turf in Cricketfield Lane over the Easter weekend, against Woodford Wells on Saturday and Hoddesdon on Monday.

The season proper starts on April 29 when they take on Hoddesdon again, this time away from home.
