A group of six Borehamwood school children have gone to Denver for ten days to teach their American peers a thing or two about democracy.

The Year 4 pupils from Summerswood First School in Furzehill Road are visiting Colorado to show pupils and staff there how their school council works.

Accompanied by adults including head teacher Irene Rowland, her husband Patrick and teacher Jamie Austin, they will describe how their student body passes on concerns to teachers each week.

The council comprises one boy and one girl from each class in the age range five to nine.

Summerswood is one of just seven schools in the country taking part in the Lighthouse School scheme, set up by Community Service Volunteers to promote citizenship in young people.

The organisation contacted the school after it heard about the good work done by the pupils' council. A spokeswoman said the group will be taking a video of school life to show the Americans.
