BARNET, Enfield and Haringey Health Authority is investigating claims that a GP struck off a child from his patient list because the parents refused the controversial MMR jab.

The mother of the child claimed she was told by the manager of her health centre in Enfield and Haringey that her child was removed to help the doctor reach Government targets for immunisation.

Failing to comply with the targets can cost GPs thousands of pounds a yearin income.

A spokeswoman for the health authority and Haringey Primary Care Trust said a full investigation was being carried out but she urged parents to continue having their children vaccinated.

She said: "The health authority does not support patients being struck off GP lists due to a refusal to receive treatment. We are still investigating the facts of this case as a matter of urgency.

"The health authority and Haringey Primary Care Trust strongly urge parents to have their children immunised to protect them against MMR (measles mumps and rubella)."

She added: "The weight of scientific evidence shows that this is the best route for the child.

"We also recognise that the final decision rests with the parents."
