Millbrook II 34, Ryde 38

IN A topsy-turvy game which saw the lead change hands on seven separate occasions, Ryde just about managed to come out on top over a spirited Millbrook side in Merit Two.

After Millbrook scored a try early on, Ryde sparked into life and bagged a try through Josh Sayers, converted by Vince Kennedy to take the lead.

Millbrook scored next, with a converted try but back came Ryde again and, after an excellent charge down by Tom Dibben and quick thinking from Rob Knight, Kennedy touched down to put Ryde back in front. Millbrook had the final say, however, when they rolled a scrum forward and pounced to end the half 17-12 up.

In the second half, Ryde put some more flowing moves together, David True and Wilks Lettings man of the match Martin Kirwood-Slack combining well to send the latter over.

Millbrook pressed again and once more retook the lead before Ryde finally stepped up the extra gear they required.

First, High Park Tavern man of the match Sayers crossed to level the scores at 24-24 before Knight used his excellent acceleration to finish off a flowing backs’ move, putting Ryde ahead for the fourth time in the game.

Millbrook then scored their fifth try of the game but crucially were unable to convert it. Excellent play by Dominic Tweed and Rory Julian then set up True who drew the final defender before popping to Kirwood-Slack to score his second and Ryde’s sixth try of the day.

Kennedy’s kicking was proving crucial and his conversion took his personal tally to 13 on the day. Ryde had a nine-point lead and, for the first time, breathing space. Millbrook threw everything they had at Ryde in the last ten minutes and concerted pressure led to two yellow cards for Ryde players.

Millbrook were able to score once but, thanks to ferocious tackling from all of Ryde, with Adam Moody leading the way, the home side were unable to get the crucial second, leaving Ryde as victors in an enthralling game of rugby.

Ryde: Gough, Moody, Dibben, Radford, Kirwood-Slack, Edwards, Sayers, Fraser-Woodbridge, Waldron, True, Knight, Kennedy, Tweed, Caws, Vyse, Julian, Roberts.
