SIBLINGS Anna and Michael Joyce produced some stunning table tennis to be crowned winners of the County Press Tournament last week.
Christ the King College student Anna, 15, who came second last year with father, Barry, teamed up with her younger brother, 13, to dominate the contest, winning their group before defeating Alan Hulbert and Karen King in the semi-final, and Andrew Ely and Matt Cornforth in the final.
In all, 16 pairs took part in the contest at Smallbrook, split into four groups with the winners going through to the knock-out stages. In each game, the players took each other on in singles matches, with a doubles game to make for a total of three games per match.
In Group one, Alan and Karen won, with Derek Pittard and Trevor Farmer runners-up.
The second group was won by mother and son, Pauline and Alex Rorke, with Richard Deavall and John Weston second, while Anna and Michael won group three over Roger Nevell and Andy McQuillan. The fourth group was won by Andrew and Matt, with Brian Evans and Dot Millmore second.
In the semi-finals, Anna lost her match against Alan, 12-10, 6-11, 11-6, but Michael did brilliantly against Karen, winning 12-10, 11-6. In the deciding doubles game, Anna and Michael were too strong, winning 11-8, 11-6.
In the other semi-final, Andrew defeated Alex 11-9, 11-9 but defeat for Matt against Pauline set up the doubles for the decider. It was a close battle, but in the end Andrew and Matt won 11-8, 12-10.
The final was exceptionally close. Anna just lost out to Andrew, 8-11, 11-6, 8-11, while Michael was masterful against Matt, winning 11-2, 11-9.
The doubles went to three sets, with no more than three points separating the pairs in each set. Anna and Michael took the first set 11-9, but lost the next 12-10. However they held their nerve to win the deciding set, and the title 12-10.
