RUGBY fields in West Wickham were excavated after residents were rumoured to be picking up Roman coins and jewellery with metal detectors.

Three pitches on Sparrows Den, in West Wickham, were ploughed five months ago following heavy rain and flooding.

The rugby fields conceal the site of a major Roman road running from London to Lewes, in Sussex. Following reports that treasure hunters had found more than 100 Roman coins and a brooch, Bromley Council carried out its own excavation.

Alan Tyler, curator at Bromley Museum, said: "I've heard stories that a brooch and around 140 coins have been found but I've not seen any of them as they are probably in people's private collections.

"Our excavation came up with some Roman pottery and tiles. The hole has now been filled again, but we are hoping to go back for another quick look for the road surface."

The council is expected to re-seed the grounds for the next rugby season.
