MARTIAL ARTS

THERE were wins for two members of the Vectis MMA (mixed martial arts), which made its competition debut at a recent amateur fight show in Portsmouth.

Club coach and founder Alex Box, of Shanklin, and his student, Ewan Wheeler, both aged 22, took part and achieved impressive results at the event, held at Gym01.

Ewan, of Newchurch, who had no previous martial arts experience when he joined the club seven months ago, won his first ever fight.

In the first round fight, he beat his older and more experienced opponent with a "guillotine choke".

Alex, who fought under semi-pro rules, won his first round fight with an "arm bar" manoeuvre.

He said: "This is a tremendous start to our competition record and the team is very proud of its achievement.

"Since starting the club, I am very pleased with how much my students have learnt and how far the club has come in such a short time."
