Leading apprentice jockey Chris Catlin, from Barnet, enjoyed a rare distinction when he rode a 100-1 outsider, Gran Clicquot, to victory at Brighton on Tuesday, beating champion jockey Kieran Fallon on 3-1 second favourite Sharp Shuttle.

Long-time punters said they could not recall a previous 100-1 winner at the track.

Undulating Brighton is not an easy ride, particularly for an apprentice, but 19-year-old Catlin, of Quinta Drive, Barnet, kept his cool and rode a perfectly judged race in the Cuisine de France Selling Stakes.

Taking up the running two furlongs out, he held off the strong challenge of Fallon on Sharp Shuttle and won comfortably by one-and-a-quarter lengths.

Said winning trainer Gerry Enright: "The mount was offered to Kieran Fallon at the weekend, but I did not hear from him. I knew Chris Catlin has been riding well, and so I gave him his chance. He gave the horse a super ride."

Apprenticed to Ken Ivory at Radlett, Catlin moved close to his 50th winner of the season. He has a good chance of becoming champion apprentice.
