Radlett's annual fair and carnival parade has been cancelled this year because it is "tired" and in need of a revamp.

The Radlett and District Round Table, which organises the event, also felt that it would be in competition with the parish council's Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations, which would have taken place within the space of a few weeks.

Round table chairman, Jeremy Pepper, said: "The events would have essentially been in competition with each other for people's time and money. We would be better taking a step back and helping to run the jubilee celebrations, and buy ourselves time to see how to take it forward in the future.

"There is little point us spending six to eight months organising something that had become a bit tired."

Around 2,000 people attended last year's July Radlett and District Round Table Village Fair and Carnival Parade, which raised £3,000 for local charities and included a procession of floats along Watling Street, and stalls and funfair at Phillimore Recreation Ground.

Mr Pepper stressed that funds to charities would not be harmed by the cancellation of this year's carnival, set to return next year.

He said the round table wanted to look at why the numbers of people and stall-holders attending the carnival had gradually declined, and added: "We were aware that people were not coming for long and were not really up for what we were organising. We have to tap into the psyche of local people and find out what they want from the event."
