IT WAS a mixed bag of cricket results at the weekend, as three of the Isle of Wight’s five most competitive sides were beaten comprehensively.

In the Southern Premier League Division, Ventnor were humbled by Hook and Newnham Basics – losing by seven wickets.

Welcoming the mainland outfit to Steephill, the visitors won the toss and elected to field.

Henry Bartlett (70) led the Ventnor offensive, but his side could only muster 189, which the visitors bested comfortably.

Meanwhile, in Hampshire Division 1, Ryde made short work of a travelling East Woodhay side after winning the toss and electing to field.

Ashley Goldsmith claimed four scalps, and Will Mew three, as the Woodhay batters were limited to a modest 121 runs.

Tom Durman (56 not out) was the pick of the bunch as Ryde surpassed Woodhay’s innings with seven wickets to spare.

In Hampshire Division 3 (south), Shanklin and Godshill hit the road to take on Sway, and lost by eight wickets.

The Islanders won the toss and elected to bat first, and it was Ben White who shone the brightest – hitting a fabulous 108 not out – but the hosts restricted the rest of Shanklin’s batters.

The Islanders posted a score of 231, which Sway overcame with eight wickets to spare.

Over in Division 4, Ryde II were comprehensively beaten on the road to Burridge – losing by 111 runs.

The Islanders won the toss and elected to field, limiting the hosts to 230 – Kensei Parker (2-38) and Frank Gumley (2-42) doing most of the damage.

But Ryde’s reply fell short – a modest 119 all out.

The same could not be said of fellow Division 4 side Ventnor II, who beat Portsmouth and Southsea by nine wickets.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, posting a meagre 106 – Sam Read (4-14), Jack Powell (4-21) and Toby Noyes (2-34) all bringing their A games.

Ventnor’s reply was swift, with Gary Legg (70) leading the charge.
