THE Isle of Wight’s cricket calendar was dominated by cup competition fixtures this week, as six sides gave their all in the quest for silverware.

In group one of the Senior Cup, Arreton got the better of St Helens after the latter chose to bat first.

Marc Allen and Jordon Langdon (42) helped St Helens to 155, but bowlers Dan Ward (3-25), Gary Cooper (3-29) and James Burt (3-39) made a real nuisance of themselves.

In response, Arreton hit 156 with nine wickets to spare, with Cooper (110 not out) in imperious form.

Over in group two, Cowes reigned supreme over Carisbrooke High School Old Boys, winning by eight wickets.

Cowes won the toss and elected to field, restricting Carisbrooke to 72 – R Wilson (30) the only standout batsman.

Bowlers Scott Rice (5-34), C Higgins (2-16) and Kayton Barton (2-7) proved too much for the opposition, and batsman Jack Summers (32 not out) all but secured the win early in the Cowes innings.

Newport, on the other hand, put Freshwater to the sword – winning by 93 runs.

Newport won the toss and were the first to bat – posting 227, thanks in no small part to Luke Chessell and Gareth Bricknell (70).

Dale Dovale claimed three scalps from 53 runs, but the Freshwater batmen couldn’t respond in kind – G Richardson (58 not out) the most competitive.

Newport bowlers Glenn Lovegrove, Adam Wilson and Ashley Brett took two scalps each.

Meanwhile, in Island League Division 1, Northwood II were awarded maximum points after Ryde III were forced to concede.
